Wanamaker, convinced of Tanner’s talent and believing that the artist should see firsthand the websites of the Holy Land that so impressed him, sponsored Tanner’s first trip to the Near East; he followed a long custom established by painters of the Orientalist motion who took the peoples and locations of Turkey, North Africa, and the Center East as their topics.
