They’re the famous African-American artists who’ve exquisitely shared portrayals of historic events and people, cultural perspectives, and the experiences and struggles of minorities by way of their artwork. Working with little or no formal training, and sometimes employing cast-off objects and unconventional supplies, these artists have created visually compelling works that address among the most profound and chronic issues in American society, together with race, class, gender, and religion.
Its assortment of African-American artwork is a targeted initiative established to deal with, accumulate, conserve, and exhibit an inspiring vary of works, thereby confirming African-American art’s important place within the history and discourse of American art.
Pippin additionally painted narrative works about anti-slavery figures John Brown and Abraham Lincoln (for instance, Trial of John Brown, 1942, de Younger Museum, Superb Arts Museums of San Francisco; Abe Lincoln, The Great Emancipator, 1942, Museum of Fashionable Artwork, New York).

Presented by the Museum of Fantastic Arts, Houston, in collaboration with the Museum’s patron group 5-A (the African American Art Advisory Affiliation), the Citywide African American Artists Exhibition provides artists the chance to indicate their work to a broader public, and to the collecting community.
